This beautiful hotel was built to capture traditional Nubian Hassan Fathy-esque exteriors. The interiors, however, neither authentically resembled that, nor had modern-day hotel luxuries and sleek looks. The design of this hotel room addresses this Nubian vernacular style in a variety of materials and textures with an earthy neutral color palette, bringing modern fixtures and clean lines to the mix to create a balanced contrast.
A neutral, textured palette runs through the room, from the leather-panel headboard to the woven side tables, with modern fixtures and clean-lined furniture layered on top to keep the vernacular references from feeling costume-like.
The terrace featured concrete-finished flooring, local, low-maintenance plants, and built-in seating as a nod to traditional raw, relaxed settings by the water, while modern fixtures were used minimally to complement the interiors. I adjusted the floor plan layout to a more open feel, and having stayed there several times, accumulated a cohesive vision of the design before curating mood boards and modeling and rendering the room and terrace.
